Hi, I’m Jonathon - a UX designer from Bangor with a passion for clean, thoughtful design and solving real-world problems. Creating digital products has been a huge part of my life for the last number of years - I’m driven daily to craft intuitive, creative and genuinely useful experiences, whether it’s designing interfaces, building brands, or refining user flows, I’m all about the details that make things feel just right.
My time studying Interaction Design (Digital Design) has allowed me to truly develop my design skills and creative thinking, from understanding core design fundamentals in first year, to working on branding and UX tailored projects - I have been introduced to all aspects of knowledge required to move into the creative industries. One of the most pivotal moments in my journey was securing a placement year with Instil in Belfast. During this time, I had the opportunity to work on real industry projects, collaborating with experienced designers and developers on meaningful client work. The placement exposed me to industry-standard tools, agile workflows and the importance of designing with scalability and accessibility in mind.
Atlas Coaching is a brand-led digital platform designed to simplify and elevate how personal trainers manage their business and connect with their clients. Born from a frustration with disjointed tools, messy paper trails and a lack of professional presentation, Atlas was created to offer a more intuitive, all-in-one solution. The goal was to empower trainers with tools for client management, progress tracking, scheduling, messaging and payments - all while giving clients their own portal to stay engaged and accountable. We wanted to build a product that feels modern, polished and human-centred - a true reflection of the quality service trainers provide.
The creation of Atlas began with deep industry research - interviews and surveys with personal trainers to understand their existing systems, challenges and workflows. This research revealed a clear opportunity: many were juggling multiple platforms or relying on pen and paper, which led to inefficiencies and an unprofessional experience for their clients.
Insights from this research informed on the requirements to fulfil the needs of personal trainers and the feature sets to structure the application - prioritising tools that trainers needed most while also considering what would benefit their clients. Throughout development, we conducted A/B testing on key interface decisions and ran usability sessions to refine flows, focusing on speed, intuitiveness, and clarity. Every decision was shaped by feedback, ensuring the app feels right for real-world use.
Through continuous iteration and user-focused research, it became clear that consistency and speed were key in developing Atlas efficiently. As the interface evolved, I began building a dedicated component library – a centralised system of reusable design elements such as buttons, forms, modals and navigation components.
This approach allowed for faster prototyping, reduced duplication, and ensured a consistent visual language across the app. Each component was designed with responsiveness, accessibility and clarity in mind, allowing me to focus on refining user flows without having to repeatedly build elements from scratch.
The final outcome is a multi-platform product that spans a beautifully designed mobile app for personal trainers, a tailored client portal and a smartwatch companion for real-time tracking and ease of access. Alongside the app ecosystem, Atlas is supported by a responsive marketing website, branded print collateral and a growing social media presence aimed at building community and credibility.
Atlas doesn’t just streamline admin - it elevates the entire coaching experience. It’s our hope that it will become a trusted tool in the fitness industry, helping trainers grow their business and deliver better outcomes for their clients.
