The Project and The Problem

How much food is wasted in the world? 2.5 billion tonnes of food is wasted every year across the world, that’s 40% of all food produced for human consumption, and means the average global household wastes 1.5 tonnes of food each year. According to a study by the World Wildlife Fund and Tesco. (Jackman, 2023)

I received a survey of 88,2% of people who agreed that customers feel bad when they waste food. Moreover, the need to tackle food waste was agreed 100% from people and the use of digital is the answer.

The Solution

Foodmagic provides a convenient tracker for people to prevent household food waste. The app acts as a digital advisor and assistant, all while with the independence that they need. This mobile application is available to download from any app store. Upon sign up, each user has to undergo unboarding to set their preferences with the app. The data will be used to sync food recommendations and their lifestyle.

The Process

It is a bit challenging at first but I have to admit that this seems to be my first user experience design that conducted user testing. The quality of finding the right target took a toll of time. I had to make a survey to ask what kind of students or family they are in order to proceed testing the convenience and the suitableness of my app to them. However, this meant that I was able to communicate and research the right target market. The answers that I get from them are pretty satisfactory. The creation of my brand took a bunch of trials and errors. I had to draw 20 elements to find the right graphic for my brand. I found myself attached to one design before asking for critiques. I had to start asking opinions from other people and the target market instead of just assuming. This turned out to remind me to stop assuming, and start testing in real life.

Additionally, User testing taught me to elevate my prototype with real users and enables me to pin points the things that need to be improved. Throughout my experience handling user experience’s design, I have never tried talking inside a working group where I get a lot of critical feedback from real users. Through this process, I can really explore and analyse the target audience’s behaviour when interacting with Foodmagic. Foodmagic provided me with the chance to test my assumptions for this project and a reminder that we are designing for users and not for us.

The Outcome

The process was fun and I'm glad to be leaving with a project that I can be proud to share and will be saying that I'm the creator of FoodMagic. Will stay enthusiastic with what lies in the future.
